What changed?

In effect since July 2026. Australian Government Parental Leave Pay offers eligible families up to 130 days, equivalent to 26 five-day weeks, for children born or adopted from 1 July. This policy update recaps a change already operating, not a new November announcement.

Is that 26 weeks for each parent?

No. It is a family limit. For partnered families, 20 days are reserved for the partner. Both parents' eligibility matters when using the full allocation. Government payments are distinct from employer leave arrangements.

What should I check?

Check the child's birth or adoption date, income, work and residence rules, and each parent's claim. Living in Australia alone does not establish eligibility. Individual visa and tax advice is outside this summary.

Services Australia says an eligible pre-birth claim showing 120 days will be adjusted after proof of a birth or adoption from 1 July. Checked 1 November 2026.
